Music
Southwestern provides a solid foundation for a career in music, music education, or the music industry. Hands-on ministry and performance opportunities are built into each program to provide you with practical experience and sharpen your skills. Meanwhile, experienced faculty provide specialized instruction for your area of specialization.
You will learn music theory, conducting, arranging, and composing skills; leadership skills for a variety of music careers; and build upon your God-given talents.
Participate in departmental ensembles, including Band, Jazz Ensemble, Harvester Choir, Chorale, Piano Ensemble, Ransomed, Furious Love and Hand Bells. Experience public performances through music recitals, worship leading in daily chapel services, worship team, and special music ministry.
One of the best components of the program is the music practicum designed to suit your needs and interests. Church Music, Contemporary Worship and Church Ministries/Music majors are placed in a church, under the direction of a mentor music director. Performance majors have the opportunity to choose a Music Ministry practicum in a church, or a Music Pedagogy practicum with a faculty member as a mentor.
Music Education majors also spend a semester student teaching in elementary and secondary music programs in public schools.
