![]() According to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, 40,000 people die daily from starvation and hunger related illnesses. Thirty-four thousand of those deaths are children under the age of five. SMA and Student Congress partnered together for a joint project to address this need by promoting World Hunger Day on Monday, November 19. World Hunger Day is a day set aside by the Assemblies of God to increase awareness of hunger in the world. This emphasis was highlighted on Monday in various ways on the SAGU campus. During chapel, students, faculty and staff collected donated non-perishable items in borrowed shopping carts. A cash offering was also received. Students were encouraged to "give a day away," whether in the form of giving a day's wages, a day's time or a day's food away to those who are in need. “Enough talking. Let’s do something,” challenged SMA President Phillip Dow. Food items will be donated to a local ministry to distribute locally while monetary gifts will be given to the Lillian Trasher Orphanage in Egypt to help minister to abandoned and desperately needy children. Following the chapel, there were events and skits throughout the day, culminating Monday evening at World Prayer with a special guest speaker. |
