Waxahachie, TX – Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) continued their homestand on Friday afternoon as they hosted Wiley College (Texas). The Lions (6-3, 0-0) gave the Wildcats (4-1, 0-0) their first loss of the season as they took the opener of the series by the score of 12-11.
Top Performers
- Augustin Martinez ( SR/Sugarland, TX ) was dealing today as he racked up 8 strikeouts over five innings but ran into a little trouble as he walked three batters before exiting after the fifth inning.
- Sonny Boyd ( SO/Mansfield, TX ) had 4 RBI’s on the day with 3 hits. Kyle Coolidge ( SR/Newberry Park, CA ) also added 3 hits of his own.
- JV Verdin ( FR/Dallas, TX ) scored a team-high 3 runs
- SAGU got themselves in trouble with 6 errors on the day
- 16 runners were left on base between the two teams
- SAGU hit .333 for the game.
Lions Review
- Martinez retired three-straight batters in the top of the first inning, two of which via strikeout.
- Verdin reached base on a walk in the bottom of the first,
- SAGU would add one run in the second inning and another in the fourth inning. The Lions led 3-0 moving into the fifth inning.
- Wiley finally got on the board in the fifth inning, but SAGU put up 7 runs in the bottom of the inning thanks to doubles by Joseph Vazquez ( SO/Katy, TX ) and Boyd to take a commanding 10-1 lead.
- Wiley chopped the lead in half scoring 5 runs in the sixth inning thanks to three errors by SAGU. Wiley cut the deficit to 10-6 moving to the seventh inning.
- The Lions gave up 3 more runs on four hits as the massive early lead was nearly gone. Fast forward to the top of the eighth inning and SAGU found themselves down for the first time in the game 11-10.
- SAGU would answer as Coolidge knocked Verdin in and then took the lead (12-11) as AJ Montgomery ( FR/Sugarland, TX ) scored as Ben Bills ( JR/ York, PA ) reached on a fielder’s choice.
- Logan Mann ( JR/ New Bloomfield, PA ) got knocked around a little bit but worked through it and eventually came out with the win.
What’s Next
SAGU (6-3, 0-0) and Wiley (4-1) will wrap up their series with a doubleheader tomorrow. The doubleheader will begin February 8th at 12 pm on back on SAGU campus. The second game will begin 20 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
