Waxahachie, Texas- February 5, 2016 – The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) baseball team improved to 5-1 after splitting a doubleheader with Central Christian College (CCC). In game one the Lions lost 5-4, only to rebound in game two winning, 6-4. CCC is now 3-2 for the season.
In the first game, SAGU’s Jacob Keitner started on the mound and pitched six and one / third innings. Keitner had five strike-outs with seven hits and four runs allowed. Anthony Montalvo came in relief and pitched one and two/thirds inning. Montalvo had one strike-out, three hits and one error.
At the bottom of the fourth, SAGU led 4-3. Unfortunately, CCC went on to score in the seventh and the eighth innings, winning the game 5-4. Carson Conarty went two for four with one run and one RBI. Jake Payonk went one for two, scoring one run. Raul Castro went two for four with one RBI.
In game two, Brandon Ventura pitched six and two/third innings. Ventura had six strike-outs with one hit and four runs.
SAGU was quick to score in the second game. In the bottom of the first, SAGU scored two runs off of three hits. In the bottom of the second, SAGU scored another run after Josh Terry singled to short and then advanced to second on a stolen base. Jake Payonk doubled to deep right-center, scoring Terry.
The Lions were up 6-1 going into the seventh inning. In the top of the seventh, CCC gave the Lions a run for their money scoring three runs off of two hits. Mark Martinez was brought in to finish the game, pitching one/third inning, striking out one and allowing one hit. SAGU was able to get out of the inning while leaving two on base.
SAGU’s lead-off hitter Josh Terry went three for three, with one triple, while scoring three runs. Jake Payonk went three for four with two RBI’s. Payonk also had a double.
The Lions will finish the home stand with another doubleheader. Start time for game one is at noon.
