Waxahachie, Texas- October 10, 2015- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) football team improved to 2-0 in Central States Football League (CSFL) play after topping Lyon College , 47-7. Currently only two teams, SAGU and Arizona Christian are undefeated in the CSFL.
The Lions started their homecoming game off with a bang, when SAGU senior Shakeem Taylor intercepted the first play of the game.
“The difference in the game was our turnover margin. We were able to stop their run game and force them to pass. Defensively, we made four interceptions and fortunately we are able to capitalize and make plays offensively without any turnovers of our own,” explains head coach Frank Tristan .
Junior kicker Chadd Dearen was able to put the first points on the scoreboard after kicking a 44-yard field goal. SAGU’s next possession was similar. Dearen made a first down after a fake punt, rushing for nine yards.
He was then forced to kick a 47-yard field goal. SAGU led 6-0 at the end of the first quarter.
SAGU’s first touchdown came after sophomore CJ Collins connected with freshman Levi Derry with a 14-yard touchdown pass. Dearen’s kick was good and the Lions led 13-0.
The Lions didn’t slow down, on Lyon’s next possession sophomore Carl Morgan made an interception and had a 25-yard touchdown run, to put SAGU ahead 20-0.
In the third quarter, SAGU’s Chris Jenkins scored off of a three-yard touchdown run. Dearen added two more field goals, a 35-yard and a 22-yarder, to make the game 40-0.
Lyon’s lone touchdown came after a 62-yard run by Dwane Robinson .
SAGU’s Shakeel Jones put the final nail in the coffin when he had a one-yard touchdown run.
For the first time in his career, Collins led SAGU in rushing and passing. Rushing for 118 yards and passing for 189 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Collins completed 20-for-29.
Shakeel Jones carried for 49-yards on 10 attempts. Ricky Bickham had 49-yards on six carries.
Xavier Pittman had three receptions for 71-yards. Chaz Moncriffe had three receptions for 46-yards.
Ethan Eastwood had seven tackles and Jeremiah Maat had six tackles. Carl Morgan, Marquise McCormick each had one interception and Shakeem Taylor had two interceptions.
On Saturday, October 17, 2015, SAGU will travel to the defending CSFL champs, Langston University . Langston is currently 0-1 in the CSFL and 2-3 overall. Game time is at 2:00pm.
