The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Men’s Soccer team dropped their second match of the young season in a 5:00 pm contest with the Paul Quinn Tigers . The Lions (0-2-0, 0-0-0) once again felt the sting of a self-inflicted mistake as a ball went off a Lion defender and into SAGU’s net to break the tie in a 1-1 contest. The Lions improved dramatically from their first contest on Tuesday and worked hard throughout the afternoon match.

Lion Review

• The Lions and Tigers played a scoreless first half that saw both teams move the ball well and stopping multiple attacks with solid defensive play.
• Paul Quinn held an 8-4 shot advantage in the first half but SAGU outshot Paul Quinn 10-3 in the second half to have a 14-11 advantage for the match.
• SAGU goalie Julio Guevara made six saves on the day making three very athletic saves.
• Mazvita Chidarara once again was the lone scorer for the Lions. Chidarara scored his second goal of the year on a penalty kick to put the Lions ahead 1-0.
• The Lions missed several opportunities to score in the 2 ^nd half due to a combination of timing issues between players and stout defensive play from Paul Quinn.
• For the game Paul Quinn had 14 fouls and the Lions 10 fouls. Multiple game breaks occurred for water breaks and injuries.

Words from the Coaches

“The boys came out and played much more comfortable with the ball and created plenty of opportunities to take care of the game. Unfortunately, not converting on those chances early can you the game when the fatigue preseason kicks in. Disappointed with the loss due to our overall performance” stated Clem Oancea, SAGU head coach. Oancea went on to state that the team will need to make a choice to own their performance and look for tactical and psychological ways to improve. He concluded by saying “The game can be a valuable tool moving forward because the game itself is a great teacher.”

The Next Step

The Lions (0-2-0, 0-0-0) will not play again until Saturday, September 7th at 4:00 PM in a home contest against Texas College from Tyler, TX. This will be a double tilt for SAGU with a women’s game preceding the men’s at 2:00 pm.
