Before the game, SAGU honored 13 seniors; Donovan Jeanne, Matt Lighter, Elijah Pruitt, Carl Morgan, Ricky Bickham, JP Lowery, Matt Williams, Paul Garcia, Zach Erwin, Devo McNeal, Paul Ellis, Devon Petty and Stephen Lawson . The senior class will graduate as the most winningest class in SAGU history.
Head Coach Frank Tristan finds it hard to put into words what the senior group has meant to the program, “These seniors have worked really hard. They have changed the way the community and the campus looks at SAGU football.”
SAGU was able to put points on the board first. Near the end of the first quarter, SAGU’s Tluang Hmung kicked a 29-yard field goal.
Mid-way through the second quarter, LU’s Taj Johnson had a one-yard touchdown run. The PAT from Juan Carpio was good and the score was 7-3 going into halftime.
Early in the third quarter LU was able to capitalize off of a SAGU turnover and score off a one-yard touchdown run. Both of Langston’s touchdowns came after a SAGU turnover.
The only other score from SAGU came after a 31-yard touchdown pass from CJ Collins to Bryant Dotson less than two minutes into the third. SAGU pulled within four points, 14-10.
It looked as though the game was within the SAGU’s reach twice in the fourth quarter. With six minutes left in the fourth, SAGU’s Collins passed to Blayne Rowe , who made a diving catch in the end zone to be called for a touchdown. After an officials meeting, the pass was ruled incomplete.
In SAGU’s final drive of the game, the Lions were able to get four first downs to march down to the Langston 25-yard line for a 1 st and 10. Unfortunately, SAGU wasn’t able to make it any further and missed on a 4 th and 10.
“It was a great conference championship game. In the end, they simply came up with bigger plays than we did,” explains Tristan.
SAGU’s CJ Collins was 18-for-48, passing for 181 yards and one touchdown. Roderick Brown had eight catches for 58 yards. Justin Allen had four catches for 29 yards and Bryant Dotson had two receptions for 37 yards and one touchdown.
For defense, SAGU’s Coby Roach had 12 tackles. Jordaan Coleman had eight tackles, two sacks and three tackles for loss. Aiden Estrada added seven tackles.
SAGU will play their final regular season game against Bacone College in Muskogee, Oklahoma on Saturday, November 11, 2017. Game time is at 2pm. Bacone is currently 2-7 overall and 2-4 in the CSFL.
