Outfielder was standout for Arlington Martin HS

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  — Sam Blackmon has hit the ground running since being introduced as the new Head Coach of baseball at Southwestern Assemblies of God University . The list of recruits has begun to fill.

Brock Schneider , named Mr. Baseball at one of the state’s most renowned programs, Arlington’s Martin High School , has committed to play for SAGU.

He is 5’9 outfielder who is known for his grit and competitive drive. Schneider bats and throws right-handed and also played second base for the Warriors.

Martin advanced to the Class 5A state semi-finals in each of the past two seasons, going 36-8-1 this year. They went 14-0 in district play and rose in the state poll to #6. There are 246 Class 5A teams in Texas’ University Interscholastic League (UIL).

After sweeping Southlake Carroll , they advanced to the state semi-finals before yielding to Fort Bend Dulles , 3-0.

Schneider started under veteran Coach Curt Culbertson , who just completed his 24th year at Martin.

“Brock (Brahk) is a tough competitor,” said Culbertson. “He has an excellent work ethic and is a great teammate.”

The coach should know a thing or two about good players. He coached first round draftees Ben Grieve and Todd Van Poppel at Martin during the 1990’s.

Schneider played club ball for the Arlington A’s under Coach Dave Acton .

He plans to study Sports Management at SAGU.

Schneider is an active member at Fielder Church in Arlington. He cites a number of areas he enjoyed at Fielder, including the experience of a mission trip to Bustamante in northern Mexico.

Brock and his sister, Britni (27), share parents Marc and Marcie Schneider .

About SAGU Baseball

SAGU, 14-34 in 2013, will begin their annual camp at an unannounced dated, likely in September.

Three juniors from the 2013 team will lead the way when camp begins; catcher Jared Denton (Mission, Tx / Sharyland HS), infielder Nick Sheffield (Maypearl, Tx / Maypearl HS) and outfielder Tali Fletcher (Monohans, Tx / Monohans HS). Denton and Sheffield were co-captains this season.

Returning veterans, new recruits, transfers and walk-ons will vie for their place on the roster during the fall. They resume formal practices in January, with the season starting about a month later.

The Lions are dual members in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and the National Christian College Athletic Association .

They compete in the Sooner Athletic Conference (NAIA) and the Central Region (NCCAA). The move from the Red River Athletic Conference to the SAC is a solid move by SAGU.

Considered by most to be the premier league in the NAIA, Sooner teams have won 84 national championships, while 45 SAC players have been named the National Player of the Year. The Lions begin their first season in the nine-team conference this fall.
