Muskogee, OK- Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) got back on the field Wednesday afternoon as they battled Bacone College (BC). The Lady Lions (9-10, 0-0) were impressive against the Warriors (1-12, 0-0) as they won both games by the score of 9-2 and 8-0.
Game 1
Top Performers
- Ashlyn Teran ( SO/Normangee, TX ) went 3-4 with 2 runs scored.
- Maddie Watson ( SO/Frisco, TX ) had 2 hits and scored 2 runs while Taylor Steele ( FR/Corsicana, TX ) also had 2 hits while scoring 1 run.
- Rosie Guadarrama ( JR/Cushing, TX ) and Cheyenne Fults ( SR/Waxahachie, TX ) had identical offensive production going 2-4 from the plate with one extra-base hit and scoring 1 run.
- Autumn Graham ( JR/Flower Mound, TX ) got the win for the Lady Lions as she posted 7.0 innings, as she surrendered 8 hits, 2 earned runs and logged 11 strikeouts.
- SAGU knocked the cover off the ball as they hit .406 as a team.
Lions Review
- BC jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. SAGU was retired in order in the top of the inning, while BC used two doubles and a single to grab the lead early.
- Watson led off the 3 rd inning with a single and was followed up by a Steele double. Watson got SAGU on the board after a passed ball. Steele scored from a Guadarrama double and then she came around to score off a single from Alana Ortega ( FR/Houston, TX ). In all the Lady Lions posted 6 runs to take back command of the game.
- Guadarrama knocked in Watson to add to the SAGU lead making it 7-2 moving into the 5 th inning.
- Graham was dealing as she struck out the side in the bottom of the 5 th .
- The Lady Lions used five hits over the next couple innings to tack on 2 more runs to make it 9-2 SAGU.
- Graham struck out first batter in the 7 th inning but found herself in trouble as she allowed two straight singles. She got the next batter to ground into inning-ending and a game-ending double play to deal the deal for the Lady Lions.
Game 2
Top Performers
- Kassandra Vargas ( SO/Galena, Park, TX ) was dominant on the mound pitching 6.0 innings, allowing just one hit, zero runs, no walks and three strikeouts.
- Kayla Milstead ( SR/San Diego, CA ) led the Lady Lions with 3 hits adding an RBI and scoring once.
- Steele went 2-2 scoring twice with 1 RBI.
- Teran logged just one hit but led SAGU with 2 RBI.
- SAGU continued their hot day at the plate hitting .344 in the second contest.
Lions Review
- The Lady Lions were able to draw four walks in the first two innings, but couldn’t put any runs on the board. Vargas retired the first six BC batters of the game as the game was tied 0-0.
- SAGU was assisted by 3 errors in the 4 th inning as they had the first dour batters reach base. The Lady Lions turned those BC miscues into four runs to suddenly jump out to a 4-0 over the Warriors.
- Vargas allowed a hit in the bottom of the inning but quickly erased any more damage as she forced another double play.
- Milstead opened up the 5 th inning with a base hit and then scored off of a Steele single. Another BC error would plate another run for SAGU as they added to their lead (6-0) after five innings.
- The Lady Lions added 2 more runs off of 3 hits and another Warriors’ error. Vargas sat down the BC batters in order in the bottom of the 6 th to secure the sweep for SAGU.
What’s Next
SAGU was scheduled to play Oklahoma Panhandle State University March 13-14 th , but the games have been rescheduled due to weather concerns. The games will be made up at a later date. The Lady Lion’s next series will be played at home against Oklahoma City University. The series will kick off with a doubleheader on March 17 th beginning at 2:00 pm.
