Waxahachie, TX- The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) released some important information Monday regarding the COVID-19 Pandemic and its direct impact on the Spring sports season.

President and CEO of the NAIA Jeff Carr offered this statement to the NAIA schools.

“We know this is extremely disappointing, especially for our student-athletes. All possible options for maintaining the spring season were discussed at great length by multiple governance groups. However, the growing state of emergency due to COVID-19, as well as the Center for Disease Control’s recommendation yesterday to limit gatherings to fewer than 50 people for eight weeks, meant we could not in good conscience move forward, possibly putting student-athletes, staff, and fans at risk.”

SAGU Director of Athletics, Dr. Jesse Godding, offered his thoughts regarding the SAGU community and its student-athletes.

“The events of the past few days have been extraordinary for anyone involved in athletics at any level. At the small college level our athletes, coaches, and parents feel the impact in the same manner a professional athlete does when faced with the inability to compete in the sport they have pursued for multiple years. As disappointing as the cancellation of the NAIA winter championships and spring sports has been to all involved we concur with the NAIA Council of Presidents that this is the only course of action to take for NAIA institutions.”

This is an unprecedented scenario that these governing bodies and institutions have had to deal with. The situation is fluid and information continues to change day-to-day and even in some cases, hour-by-hour. We understand that there are still unanswered questions regarding the future of some of the student-athletes, The NAIA and SAGU will continue to share information as it becomes available.
