Anabel Manley, known among those who attended South Texas District youth camps as “Sally,” was born May 10, 1914, and passed to her heavenly reward on August 1, 2001,at the age of 87.
Biography
Anabel was vivacious, joyful, and passionately committed to Jesus and her call to ministry. She was an ordained minister for over 60 years, but considered her greatest calling to have been sharing and supporting the ministry of her husband, G. Q. (Quinn) Manley. Together they served as pastors of Glad Tidings Assembly of God in Houston for 23 years until Quinn passed away in 1970. They gained national reputation for their dedicated pastoral and evangelistic ministry and their spirited singing. Their most-requested song was an unusual rendition of “I’ll Meet You in the Morning.” After Quinn’s death in 1970, Anabel served with distinction as Director of the South Texas Women’s Ministries Department for 17 years.
During their ministry at Glad Tidings, Anabel was invited by Laurell Akers to serve as Director of Camp Life in South Texas Youth Camps. Her deep love for young people, her passion for their spiritual walk with Christ, and her infectious propensity for fun made lasting impressions on campers for 10 years. It was not unusual for troubled young people to find refuge in the Manley home for an extended time as she cared for and mentored them in their walk with Jesus.
One of her passions in life was helping young men and women enter full-time ministry. Though Glad Tidings church was relatively small in membership, from its ranks dozens of young people became successful ministers and missionaries. As District WM director she worked tirelessly to provide for the needs of the missionaries from her district. When Anabel passed away, the family felt that her legacy could best be preserved by setting up a scholarship for young men and women who felt the call into full-time ministry.
