Waxahachie, Texas – May 23, 2017- Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) is excited to announce the hiring of Sam Harrell as the new SAGU Football Offensive Coordinator . Harrell comes to SAGU after a stint at Fort Worth Christian and before that he spent time winning three Texas State Championships at Ennis High School .
Harrell led the Ennis High School football team from 1994-2009. During his tenure, the Lions went 153-51. He won the 4A Texas State Championship in 2000, 2001 and 2004 as well as two other Texas State Semifinalists appearances in 1999 and 2003. Under Harrell’s leadership, Ennis went to the playoffs 11 consecutive years and had nine straight seasons of 10 wins or more.
SAGU Head Coach Frank Tristan is eager to have the hall of fame coach leading the offense, “Coach Harrell has an incredible resume and is an unbelievable football coach. But more impressive than his resume is character and integrity as a man of God. Our program and institution will be better because Sam Harrell is part of it.”
In 2005, Coach Harrell was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and ultimately had to retire from coaching in 2010. Since his retirement, Harrell has traveled to Panama for Stem Cell treatments and has regained much of his health.
In 2014 he began coaching again at Fort Worth Christian . He has been the offensive coordinator and the quarterbacks coach for the past three season.
Over his 33 year career, Harrell has racked up numerous honors. In 2013 he was inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame . In the same year he also received the Tom Landry Award from the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA). He was the THSCA president in 2010 and the THSCA director from 2007-2009. He was named the Texas 4A Coach of the Year in 1998 and 1999.
Harrell lives in Ennis, Texas with his wife Kathy. They have three grown sons who are all coaches; Zac, Graham and Clark. Harrell also has six grandchildren.
